***IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING PAYPAL!!!!!!!!

Recently I was the victim of an attempted unauthorized charge through my PayPal account to the tune of 690.00 US! Below is a record:

On May 6, 2008 I received an email from PayPal stating a payment had been processed for item #120257262873 **NeW IPHONE 16G Unlocked, for a total of 690.00 USD. I made NO such transaction! I immediately contacted PayPal to report the incident and completed the online reporting form for unauthorized use.

Below is all the information I have on this attempted unauthorized intrusion into my PayPal account.

I was lucky, or so I thought, to have caught this in time and fill out the necessary unauthorized use forms. I immediately changed my password and security questions. I got PayPal to fax a letter to my bank stating this was an unauthorized charge so that my bank would reimburse me the 30.00 NSF fee. Then I receive another email from PayPal stating that even though a hold for unauthorized use was in place, their automated system would still try to process the payment a second time. I called PayPal back and was told that there was “nothing they could do” about this and that is just the way their system is set up. NO protection for account holders!!!! Also, that I could not close the PayPal account until this payment had been processed a second time. So I called my bank back, and was told they would put a stop payment on the transaction (this will cost me 25.00) and further advised me that I would have to close my checking account and re-open another to make sure PayPal does not try to put this through again. Not only will this mess up my son’s disability direct deposit, but the nightmare it has caused me I can’t even put into words. And to be fair it’s not my banks fault, nor their responsibility, to fix the problem and reimburse me any money lost. It wasn’t a breach into their system. Had it been they would have made good and pursued legal action. I am fortunate that my bank knows me and is more than willing to help in any way they can. They have been awesome and supportive.

PLEASE watch out for PAYPAL!!!! Their system is NOT "the most secure way to pay online"!!! Not by a LONG shot, as I'm finding out now! Further, they will NOT make good on any fees incurred, OR money lost/stolen from your account, as a result of a breach into their system. My best advice, even if you’ve never had a problem with PayPal before (I hadn’t in almost 8 years until now), know that if something like this does occur they will NOT make good any fees incurred as a result. Nor will they actively pursue investigating/prosecuting the person/s involved. You will be totally, ‘out of luck’.

To be sure, no system is totally secure in this day and age. But it is how a company responds to a serious security breach and what they do to protect their account holders that will tell the tale of the company. Most credit cards/bank cards will reimburse money lost as a result of a breach into their system. They protect their account holders, back them up, and actively/aggressively pursue an investigation/prosecution when and where possible. PayPal will NOT! Period! Bottom line, you will be screwed just like I am now. So best idea is to get rid of PayPal before something like this happens to you. Had I had that money in my bank account PayPal would have withdrawn that money from my bank account and I would be out 690.00, period, plain and simple. With no means of getting it back. I have since found out I am FAR from being in a minority of people this has happened to with PayPal. They have even been the focus of several class action law suits. They get away with it because they are not a “financial institution”, such as a bank, and as such are not governed by the same rules and regulations. Translation, NO guarantees.

Sadly until enough people get screwed and are willing to stand up, cancel their accounts and speak out they will continue their same practices. Please feel free to pass this on to everyone you know so that this same thing, or worse, does not happen to you or someone you know.
